Artist: Ashley Whiting
Pen and ink, framed. Size 11” x 14”
Artist statement about this piece:
After I had my sons early last year, I found new motherhood to be less of a warm glow, and more of an isolating experience. Being responsible for two vulnerable infants humbled me and constantly reminded me of the fragility of life, to the detriment that I could not focus on anything else. Postpartum depression invited in an existential obsession with the morbid and with mortality that lasted a whole year, swallowing all the happiness that I hoped motherhood would bring. This piece represents that season of my life, and the acceptance to move forward.
